"Proform's 5 Star Interactive Trainer 1800"

The 5 Star Interactive Trainer 1800 is proform's top of the line model. At $1899 it is the most expensive, and

with a 3.0 CHP motor and 14% incline capabilities, it is Proform's highest performing treadmill. I will use the Proform 1800 as a guide against which to judge all the other Proform models. I figured that it doesn't mean much to the average shopper to just

have a list of features without knowing how one model compares to another. And since I didn't want to compare every permutation, I figured it was best to pick one Proform model -- the 5 star interactive trainer 1800 -- and compare every Proform model to it.

Then, when I turn my attention to other models, I will compare the top Proform model -- the 1800 -- to the top models for the other brands.

And, of course, I will treat the other brands the same way. This will give you a way to see the relative costs and benefits in a way that makes sense.

For what it's worth, I don't plan to buy the 1800. It's not that I'm not willing to pay $1899 for a treadmill. I figure that if I can get a really high quality piece of fitness equipment that will last for years, it's well worth between $1,000 and $2,000. I paid about $1200 for a semi-recumbent bike about 10 years ago, and I can say two things. First, it's still going strong. Second, because it was a high quality, smooth, gym quality machine, I actually used it. So cost isn't it.

The reason I'm leaning away from the Proform 1800 is that I don't need the machine to go 12 MPH or get up to a 14% incline. And Proform offers models (like the 1200) that are just as roomy and robust, that go up to 10MPH and a 10% incline, and these are plenty for me. And since the 1200 is several hundred dollars less, I know at least that given a choice between the 1200 and the 1800, I would choose the 1200.

But that doesn't mean the 1200 is the best Proform model either. I'll have to see which meets my needs best, and plan to try a few models out if I get a chance.
